Thailand, Land of Firsts

Written and told: Dec 24, 2012

I have created many blogs before but today I can only remember one--this blog. I always wanted to maintain one but it has always been a challenge to  regularly put an entry. In fact, I have left most of my wonderful travel escapades untold.

First things first, let's back track and I will try to re-tell those stories. First stop, Bangkok!

My
memories of Bangkok were unforgettable because it was my first international trip and my first time to travel alone. There was an invitation from my College Organization to join the International Conference for Economics Students (ICES) and in order to qualify you have to submit an essay about economic cooperation between ASEAN and China. So I did submit an essay and I was not only hoping to join the conference but I was also praying to be picked as one of the presenters so I can get a free registration to the conference. I'll make this quick---I qualified to the conference and I was chosen to be one of the presenters. My registration to the conference was free and my airfare was sponsored by my school. That was a pretty good deal for a hungry-for-adventure student like me.

View of Bangkok City from my room. Traffic is also bad in most parts of the city.
During my presentation at the International Conference of Economics Students (The price I had to pay to get a  free trip  *wink*)
with my roommate Selin :). Reality bites, I was really thinner back then :(

Our Thai friends brought us to Khao San Road for our first night life adventure. Khao San is famous for their night market, cheap accommodations and authentic thai restaurants. The word khao san itself means milled rice and is an attribution to the historical role of this street in the rice trade. I had my picture taken with this guy because he is a head-turner. He was just driving up and down in Khao San and has a label---"Mr. Thailand". I tried looking up for his name and I was surprised to know that he is a certified Khao San Icon. He actually provides marketing services to establishments in Khao San. Read up on Mr Thailand's interesting story here. Don't forget to have your picture taken with this man! I'm sure you won't miss him with his flashy looks.
My first authentic Tom Yum soup (Still in Khao San). Admittedly, it was too spicy that I had to pull out many (if not all)  tissue papers to wipe my teary nose (oversharing?). I wanted to stop eating but it was too good.

One of my favorite shots with my co-delegates.

Siam Paragon-Thailand's biggest mall

Tired of walking and looking for cheap finds.

I think it is a mortal sin to go to Thailand and not try the famous thai massage.
The Tuk Tuk ride (their version of the Philippines' Tricycle)

The Grand Palace Tour. Grand palace is a complex of buildings at the heart of Bangkok City. This served as the official residence of the Kings of Siam.

Lost and Found.
Thank you, Bangkok!

To my ICES friends, we have not done that reunion we talked about 5 years ago but I am sure I will see you in one of my future trips.

Always Sleepy,
Robe
